It’s bluebell time!
England has more bluebells than anywhere else in the world. Each year in late Spring woodlands up and down the country burst into vivid colour with the arrival of millions of flowering bluebells. As if this wasnt magical enough, the native wildflowers time their arrival with the fresh Spring foliage on the trees; presenting a carpet of blue beneath a vibrant canopy of bright greens. It's an almost irresistible lure for any landscape photographer, and I am no exception. Each year I aim to make at least one trip to a bluebell woodland, partially to photograph the majestic scenery but equally just to soak up the amazing experience.
When living in Hampshire my woodland of choice was Micheldever Wood, a fantastic beech woodland bursting with bluebells every May. But in the last two years I have been visiting West Woods in Wiltshire which, while probably lesser known that Micheldever, really should wear the crown of England's most magnificent bluebell woodland. On each visit I am always pleasantly surprised by the sheer volume of bluebells to be found here; in all directions a sea of blue and purple brings the woodland floor to life. You can walk on many different paths and completely lose your sense of direction in the woods, yet you will still be surrounded by bluebells. If anybody else has any favourite bluebell woodlands that you are happy to share please leave a comment, and I will try and visit some next year.
If you are living in the UK or Northern Europe and havent visited a bluebell woodland yet this Spring go now! There is still time, and you will feel completely rewarded and revitalised for making the effort!
