Brecon Beacons in the Spring
My latest book project 'A Year in the Brecon Beacons' is nearly due for submission. I just have one season, Spring, remaining which is proving to be a little tricky. Winter hung around quite late this year and so it seemed to take an eternity for the trees to start waking up to Spring. That is happening now, but the weather is now proving the stumbling point, and with May already into double figures time is quickly running out!
My last trip in April was a largely unsuccessful affair that began with a grim 7 hour journey, hopelessly stuck in traffic on a closed M4 and watching the sunset through my windscreen. The subsequent sunrise and sunset didnt materialise, and the following sunrise was so rainy that I conceded defeat and headed home almost empty handed. Luckily I had some sunshine while climbing the mountain ridge overlooking Llyn y Fan Fach in the Black Mountain, otherwise I probably would have thrown myself over the edge in despair!
I have a couple more trips planned for May, mainly to the eastern side of the National Park which is rich in photographic subjects. The camper van is loaded and ready to go; I just have to hope for a break in the weather and I will be off up the M5. If that doesnt happen I may just have to change the book title to 'Three Quarters of a Year in the Brecon Beacons'!!
