The Devil’s Bridge

Tarr Steps, Exmoor

Ref: BB053968
Gallery: Exmoor

According to local legend the prehistoric clapper bridge Tarr Steps was built by the Devil as a place to sunbathe.  All trespassers were forbidden passage upon penalty of death, so the locals persuaded a Parson to confront the devil.  The Parson tentatively sent a cat over first, which was promptly turned into a puff of smoke.  Then the terrified Parson decided to place his faith in his lord and stepped onto the bridge to meet the Devil.  The Devil let out a series of expletives at the Parson, to which the Parson replied with equal gusto, impressing the Devil so much with his swear words that he opened his bridge after all for anybody to cross.  A load of old cobblers, but what a terrific story!
