Never to Be
Kilve, Somerset
Ref: BB054269
Gallery: Somerset
Just visible on the cliff tops above Kilve is what appears to be a small lookout post. In actual fact this small brick built building is a retort house, built in 1924 as the first part of a plan to convert Kilve’s oil rich shale deposits into oil. Unfortunately, this grand plan fell at the first hurdle when sufficient capital couldn’t be raised for the project, and as a consequence Somerset’s predicted oil boom was never to materialise.
