Hound Tor Morning

Hound Tor, Dartmoor National Park, Devon

Ref: BB033529
Gallery: Dartmoor

Hound Tor is surrounded in mystery, legends and tales of the supernatural.  This whole area is said to be frequented by ghosts, with many sightings being recorded over the years.  Some local people even regard Hound Tor as evil, and stay well clear of the area.  The rocks are said to be the hounds of Bowerman the Hunter, turned to stone by witches many years ago; the Bowerman himself also turned to stone less than a mile to the north.  This area is also thought to be the inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Hound of the Baskervilles.  Whether there is any truth to these legends is not for me to say, but I certainly have seen nothing suspicious in my many visits and I wouldn’t deter anybody from visiting such a splendid tor.
