Blue Dawn
Lake Pukaki, Canterbury, South Island
Ref: AB011757
Gallery: New Zealand
Lake Pukaki is a spectacular glacial lake in Mackenzie Country. Like many glacial lakes, Pukaki gets its distinctive blue water colour from high levels of rock flour; fine grained rock particles from glaciars. The rock flour is carried into Lake Pukaki from the Tasman River, which is in turn fed by both the Tasman and Hooker glaciers, close to Mount Cook high up in the Southern Alps.
